Prince Edward Island (PEI) is a province of Canada consisting of the island of the same name, and over two hundred smaller islands. The island is named for Prince Edward, the fourth son of King George III and the father of Queen Victoria. Prince Edward Island is one of the three Maritime Provinces and is the smallest province in both land area and population. PEI is located about 200 kilometres north of Halifax, Nova Scotia and 600 kilometres east of Quebec City.

The island has two urban areas. The largest surrounds Charlottetown Harbour, situated on the island’s southern shore, and consists of the capital city Charlottetown. A much smaller urban area surrounds Summerside Harbour, situated on the southern shore 40 km west of Charlottetown Harbour, and consists primarily of the city of Summerside.

Prince Edward Island has a population of about 140,000. The provincial economy is dominated by the seasonal industries of agriculture, tourism, and fishery. The province is limited in terms of heavy industry and manufacturing.
